“It is important to remember that there is never any excuse for abuse.”
Elder abuse is a form of domestic and family violence, and occurs when someone that an older person knows and trusts causes them harm. The abuser could be a partner, child or grandchild, other family member, friend or neighbour.
The most common form of elder abuse is financial abuse, such as misuse of money or exerting pressure on an elderly person to transfer assets or make financial gifts. Elder abuse may also include neglect, physical abuse or psychological abuse such as threatening to withdraw care or preventing contact with other family members.
In many cases, the abuser is not in a direct caring role, and in some cases the older person may be providing care for the person who is abusing them (e.g. an elderly mother providing care for an abusive son or daughter).
It is important is to remember that there is never any excuse for abuse. Elder abuse is not ok. It is not your fault. And it is against the law.
